On February 2, 2015, Paul generated controversy by suggesting that states should not require parents to vaccinate their children, because parents should have the freedom to make that decision for their children. In an interview with CNBC on February 2, Paul clarified this statement, commenting "I'm not arguing vaccines are a bad idea. I think they are a good thing, but I think the parent should have some input. The state doesn't own your children. Parents own the children, and it is an issue of freedom." On February 3, he posted a photograph to Twitter of himself being vaccinated.

In 2014, Paul argued that the Obama administration and the CDC was downplaying the threat posed by Ebola virus. In 2020, during the coronavirus pandemic, Paul said that stay-at-home orders to halt the spread of coronavirus amounted to "dictatorship”.

‘You are not listening’: Fauci scolds Sen. Rand Paul for misconstruing New York’s coronavirus battle

Paul, who remains skeptical of face masks and social distancing despite contracting COVID-19 in March, posited the dubious argument that New York’s actually done a poor job fighting the virus and that the state’s only seeing low infectious rates at the moment because enough residents have been exposed to it and developed “community immunity.”

“How can we possibly be jumping up and down and saying, 'Oh Gov. Cuomo did a great job’ — he had the worst death rate in the world," Paul said.

The Brooklyn-born doctor wouldn’t have any of Paul’s science-defying criticism of his home state.

Cases and deaths are accelerating in states like Arizona, Utah, Iowa, Minnesota, Iowa, Nebraska, Wisconsin, and North and South Dakota, Healthline wrote in an analysis earlier this week.

Texas, California, and Florida, meanwhile, have all surpassed the death counts in the Northeast, and their numbers are still climbing.

Paul’s attempt to politicize Fauci’s consistent warnings about the virility of COVID-19 went very badly.

“I know you’re a fan of Cuomo and the shutdown in New York, you’ve lauded New York for their policy. New York had the highest death rate in the world,” Paul charged. “How can we possibly be jumping up and down and saying, ‘oh, Governor Cuomo did such a great job,’ he had the highest death rate in the world.”

Fauci shut him down.

No, you’ve misconstrued that, Senator, and you’ve done that repetitively in the past,” Fauci said. “They got hit very badly, they made some mistakes. Right now, if you look at what’s going on right now, the things that are going on in New York to get their test positivity one percent or less is because they are looking at the guidelines that we have put together from the task force, of the four or five things of masks, social distancing, outdoors more than indoors, avoiding crowds, and washing hands.”

PAUL: "Or that have developed enough community immunity that they're no longer having the pandemic because they have enough immunity in New York City to actually stop -- "

FAUCI: "I challenge that, senator. Please sir, I would like to be able to do this, because this happens with Sen. Rand all the time. You're not listening to what the director of the CDC said. In New York, it's about 22%. If you believe 22% is herd immunity, I believe you're alone in that.

Herd immunity occurs when enough of a population becomes immune to a disease through vaccine or already getting sick to make the spread unlikely between people in the community, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

Dr. Michael Osterholm, director of the Center for Infectious Disease Research and Policy, said in June that about 60% to 70% of the population must be infected with the coronavirus to reach herd immunity, McClatchy News reported.

As a medical bureaucrat in far-away Washington, perhaps he cannot empathize with the millions of Americans who have already closed down their businesses or are poised to lose them and their life savings, and who have seen their retirement funds depleted as the economy soured. Maybe he is simply oblivious to the health problems that inure when a person is one of more than 33 million Americans who have lost their job.
