The attack began around 1 p.m. while Congress convened to certify Joe Biden’s election as president — an effort met with opposition from many Republicans in Congress. The certification vote was halted and the Senate went into recess. Vice-President Mike Pence, who presided over the session, was evacuated to an undisclosed location, as were senators. Representatives were sheltering in the House chamber — protected by armed officers — and told to put on gas masks and hide under their seats. “Hakeem Jeffries says members plan to return and certify the Electoral College,” the Huffington Post’s Matt Fuller reports. “Members from both parties applaud.”

The U.S. Capitol was engulfed in chaos on Wednesday, as supporters of President Trump, responding to his call to head there, breached the complex, resulting in violence in the seat of America's federal government.
The surreal and dangerous scene interrupted proceedings in the House and Senate, as members of Congress were taking up President-elect Joe Biden's Electoral College victory.
For two months, Trump has falsely claimed the election was stolen from him, and dozens of fellow Republicans planned to object to slates of electors from various states they considered contested.
Lawmakers were debating Arizona's results — a state Trump lost narrowly — when the sessions were recessed as the U.S. Capitol Police attempted to put the complex on lockdown.

Members of Oregon’s congressional delegation expressed shock and disbelief Wednesday as a mob of violent protestors poured into the U.S. Capitol, forcing Congress and the vice president to flee.
“It’s like a third-world country,” Rep. Suzanne Bonamici told The Oregonian/OregonLive. “Someone has been shot in the Capitol. The Capitol windows have been shot out. It’s unbelievable.”
The Oregon Democrat declined for safety reasons to disclose where was Wednesday afternoon, saying only that she’s in a “locked-down” location outside the Capitol and is safe. Bonamici called on President Donald Trump to act swiftly to end Wednesday’s assault by right-wing extremists. “He needs to call this off right now,” she said. “He needs to speak up and tell his people to back off.”
